Why is SPF so important

Updated: May 15

Everybody needs some sun exposure to produce vitamin D (which helps calcium absorption for stronger and healthier bones). But unprotected exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause damage to the skin. There are other contributing factors such as heredity and environment. But sunburn and excessive UV light exposure do damage the skin. This damage can lead to skin cancer or premature skin aging (photoaging).

Sunscreen is the most fundamental step in preventing photo ageing and should be applied every morning to the face, neck and hands. When shopping for sun protection, look for the term 'broad-spectrum' as this means that it protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

UVA is present all year round and can penetrate through cloud and glass which is why sunscreen is important even in winter. UVA has a long-wavelength so penetrates deep into the dermis making it responsible for structural skin damage which can lead to premature ageing.

UVB has a shorter wave length and is responsible for top-level skin damage such as sunburn.

The SPF of a sunscreen is also important as it determines how long the sun's radiation will take to redden and burn your skin while wearing sunscreen. The higher the sunscreen, the longer you are protected if the recommended amount is applied.

If you’re inside most of the day with just short intervals in the sun, you can use a sunscreen or cosmetic product with an SPF of 15 or higher. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, especially when and where the sun is strongest, you need an SPF 30 or higher, water-resistant sunscreen.

Many people associate sunscreen with thick, greasy lotions that feel sticky and heavy on the skin. But the beauty industry has taken note and new formulas are so lightweight that they're just as pleasurable to wear as a moisturiser or serum.

My top favourite SPF products include ZO SPF 30 and primer, as it is a non-greasy, quick drying sunscreen with a sheer matte finish offering broad-spectrum protection against UVA, UVB rays. Natural melanin shields skin from aging effects of high-energy visible (HEV) light. A universal tint and a silky matte finish help reduce the appearance of skin imperfections. Can be used alone or worn under makeup for a more even, long-lasting application. Oxybenzone free. ZOX12® Engineered with our exclusive 12-hour, time-release ZOX12® complex, our sunscreens help shield the skin from harmful infrared (IR-A) rays.

Heliocare SPF 50 is an advanced Gel SPF, which is a non-comedogenic, quickly-absorbed sunscreen with SPF50 protection, specially formulated for paler skin tones or for periods of intense sunlight exposure. The lightweight texture is perfect for oily or combination skin and dries without leaving a white residue. Provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

Formulated with Heliocare's patented Fernblock protectant, a powerful antioxidant, together with Green Tea Extract and Glycosylase, it effectively combats environmental damage. Dermatologically-tested. Cruelty-free & vegan-friendly.
